Used car importers complain about new guidelines that are blocking the entry of certain used vehicles to the country. There are 900 cars stranded in customs and another 3,000 waiting in U.S. ports.

The authorities assure that these new regulations are to guarantee the safety of the cars being imported. They are blocking the entry of cars with stickers that say “export only” because it is believed these are cars no longer allowed to circulate in the U.S.

If a vehicle has a rebuilt title or has been marked as a salvage these too will not bellowed to enter Costa Rica. Perhaps the days of getting total loss vehicles and flood damaged vehicles in Costa Rica is slowly going to happen.

The general director of Customs was given the task of solving this ongoing issue. Car importers were warned eight months ago that cars must meet all security conditions. Still, importers ask him to resign from his position.

120 importers demonstrated on Wednesday around the headquarters of the National Customs Service next to the Plaza de la Cultura. They insist that the “export only” sticker is meant only to identify cars that are certified as meeting safety regulations for export.
